I’ve been using a mix of Matrix and XMPP recently to communicate with my friends. They’re both very great protocols, but each has it’s own issues that need to be fixed. For the past week I’ve been using Revolt, which is a protocol for real time communication. It’s main UI can be found at Revolt.chat and resembles the layout and style of Discord, a very popular platform for gaming and general chat. All of their code is open-source, and they have a handful of libraries in different programming languages, my favorite being Rust, of course.
As seen in my screenshot, it does look a LOT like Discord. When I first saw videos of it, I believed they just stole Discord’s UI. My particular configuration has a color scheme to make it look even closer to Discord.
Revolt is still in a public beta phase, but so far I think it’s way better than the Matrix protocol in a bunch of ways. For one, they don’t spend time on useless features, e.g Gender Pronouns (it’s real!), and they don’t leave actual issues out in the open.
Obviously, Revolt isn’t anywhere near finished. But it’s made the switch from Discord to open-source a whole lot easier, and I bet it will help you even more! This post isn’t a shill for Revolt and I was not paid or pressured into posting this, that’s something startups will do.
Stay safe,
